A legal framework is an important precondition for achieving gender equality in higher education. Therefore, a new law on higher education of Sarajevo Canton (Kanton Sarajevo / KS) plans to include a gender perspective. In line with this, on Monday, 30 May 2022, Prof. Dr Zilka Spahić Šiljak and Prof. Dr Jasna Kovačević, both UNIGeRC academic directors, visited the Minister Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Nikolić and Assistant Minister Azra Ivazović and presented proposals for integrating gender equality into this new law.

It was agreed for the University of Sarajevo to add new amendments, in addition to the existing ones, referring to the obligation of establishing an advisory body for gender equality and a university gender resource center as mechanisms in charge of dealing with the mentioned issues. In this way, the Gender Equality Council and UNIGeRC, already established within the UNIGEM project, implemented by the TPO Foundation, will be integral parts of the new law, what will practically demonstrate the commitment of the Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Youth of KS to treat gender equality not as a marginal issue, but to include it in all programs and activities.
