The film Gender and Peace in the Balkans: Charting the Way Forward

The film Gender and Peace in the Balkans: Charting the Way Forward is a compelling documentary that emerged from the international conference of the same name, held in Sarajevo from February 25–27, 2025.

Organized within the framework of the UNIGEM (Universities and Gender Mainstreaming) project, the conference brought together academics, activists, and policymakers to explore the intersections of gender and peacebuilding in the post-conflict context of the Western Balkans.

Through a blend of academic presentations, personal narratives, and activist initiatives, the film underscores the significance of collaborative efforts between academic institutions and grassroots movements. It highlights the necessity of active engagement to counter anti-gender narratives, address the legacies of conflict, and foster sustainable peace.

Featuring experiences from feminists, peace activists, educators, and students across the Balkans and beyond, the documentary delves into critical issues such as gender-based violence, the role of education in promoting a culture of peace, interethnic and interreligious solidarity, and the importance of inclusive narratives that acknowledge diverse traumas and identities.

By showcasing these multifaceted perspectives, Gender and Peace in the Balkans: Charting the Way Forward serves as both a reflection on past challenges and a call to action for building a more equitable and peaceful future.
