Sarajevo

The first Socratic Café was held on November 6, 2024, at the Boris Smoje Gallery in Sarajevo, moderated by Elmana Cerić. The topic of discussion was: “Why Should We All Be Feminists? Debunking Myths and Prejudices.”

The discussion began with the question of whether everyone should embrace feminism and explored its contemporary meaning. Participants discussed why feminism remains misunderstood and the reasons behind the stereotypes associated with it. The focus was on structural inequalities, gender stereotypes, and invisible barriers such as the “glass ceiling” that prevent women from advancing in professional hierarchies.

Gender equality is a task for all generations, and the rights already achieved must be continuously protected. Equal rights mean the ability to make free choices and access equal opportunities for everyone.

The second Socratic Café was held on November 10, 2024, at the Student Café at the Faculty of Economics, University Džemal Bijedić in Mostar, moderated by Dr. Merima Jašarević. The topic of discussion was: “Media and Violence: How Do Gender Roles in Media Shape the World?”

The discussion began by highlighting the positive aspects of media, such as promoting diversity and natural beauty in popular culture. However, participants also addressed the negative impacts, including the objectification of women and the promotion of toxic gender roles in popular culture and the music industry. It was emphasized that media often normalize violence and shape toxic self-perceptions among young people, influencing their values and behaviors.

Media must take responsibility for promoting content that affirms human rights, equality, and the empowerment of all social groups. These events are part of the UNIGEM Project, implemented by the TPO Foundation with the support of the British Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project aims to enhance gender equality and empower university communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia.
