FEMALE WORKERS IN CULTURE is a panel series, designed and moderated by professors from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Sarajevo Ajla Demiragić and Adisa Bašić. These panel discussions are realized as part of the UNIGEM project, implemented by the University Gender Resource Center (UNIGeRC) and the TPO Foundation.
Female workers in culture are conceived as a kind of small female turbines (lat. turbo, genitive turbines: whirlwind) that will generate the energy necessary to initiate, empower and encourage women in the field of culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as make a critical review of the evaluation of their work.
The basic idea is to exchange the experiences of women writers, visual artists, musicians, producers and entrepreneurs in the field of culture through a series of meetings and open conversations, i.e. the experienced professionals, but also young women who are just beginning their careers. Through these conversations, we want to empower both women workers in the field of culture and all the participants of the panels. The exchange of both negative and positive experiences and practices of female workers in culture should contribute to the feeling of affirmation, belonging to the community, valorising their achievements and improving their social status and visibility.
In many branches of art, women traditionally have the status of intruders who are, at best, guests. In practice, of course, there are many exceptional women workers in culture, but it is important to work on that their presence in art is seen and generally known, and not being looked at as some kind of exception. These meetings seek to contribute to such a change. The goal is also to establish new bonds of solidarity among women in culture, to initiate mutual cooperation, as well as to map important workers in the contemporary art production of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
